    Railay Day 2

Yesterday I had not realised that I was booked into a ‘party’ hostel in Railay. A party was in full swing when I got back to the hostel and there was no way I was going to be able to sleep so I joined the entertainment. I watched a Thai kick boxing match and a fire show. I surprisingly slept well after the entertainment and awoke early for a swim before the tourist boats arrived. It was a beautiful morning in a perfect location. After my early morning swim I decided to explore the coast by Kayak. I paddled my way around east and west Railay and then across to…

    Krabi to Railay

This morning I woke up early to see briefly see Krabi in the daylight before catching a short boat ride to Railay. Krabi water front looked great in the early morning sunshine but the rest of town is very commercial and mainly used by tourists as a stopping point for the beaches and Andaman islands. Only the locals were up and about at 6.30 am. The Thai’s are early risers and are up and about before 6 am presumably to get things out of the way before the midday heat. It was fun watching the Thai ladies doing their morning dance/exercise routine on the waterfront. Railay is a small area…

    Prachaup to Krabi

Today I travelled from Prachaup Khiri Khan down to Krabi. I knew it was going to be a long journey but it turned out to be a longer day than I was expecting. The day started at 3 am when I was awoken by torrential rain. Normally these showers pass quickly but this escalated into a full on thunderstorm which lasted nearly 4 hours. I was due to get up at 6 am to catch taxi to the station to catch a bus to Krabi. At 6 am I left my shared dormitory and met the owner Sherry out side the room. She was mopping up water which was leaking…

    Prachaup Khiri Khan Day 2

I woke up at 6 am to climb up to Wat Thammikaram Worawiham temple which is famous for the monkeys that have taken up residence there. It was also great to see the beach in the morning light. I wanted to miss the worst of the midday heat but even with an early start I was dripping with sweat by the time I reached the top of the temple. It was amazing to see all the monkeys on the way up and the views from the top were stunning. I was amazed by how placid the monkeys were and that they just ignored me and walked around me when they…

    Bangkok to Prachuap Khiri Khan

Today I started my journey south towards the famous Thai islands. I decided to break the long trip up by stopping over at a couple of costal beach resorts. I woke up early to catch a 6h bus form Bangkok to Prachuap Khiri Khan. I booked the tickets online at 12go website and then headed to the bus station. The station was very busy with many local and long distance services. I was told my bus was going to depart from gate number 5. I waited for a while but then realised I must be in the wrong place as there were on small minibuses departing. Everyone was local and…

    Bangkok Day 3

Today I took it easy and spent the morning by the pool. I went for lunch at a street stall popular with locals and was joined by a Chilean guy I met. We had sir fried crab with curry seasoning and prawns with asparagus. It was the best meal so far and the crab was amazing but not for the Chilean guy who realised later he was allergic to crab! Later in the afternoon I went to a temple on a hill called Wat Saket. The temple was very simple but the views from the top provided a great panorama of Bangkok. It impressive to see the number of new…

    Bangkok Day 2

This morning I explored parts of the new town where all the main shopping plazas are located. I need to buy a few additional items for my travels which I was unable to take on the plane.  I decided to catch a Bangkok cannel boat from the old town to the new town where I was able to transfer to the very modern sky train system which link the various plazas.  It was surprisingly simple to get around and very cheap (each journey was less than £1).  The Thai’s must like to shop as I have never seen so many shopping plazas which have all the major American and European…

    Arrived in Bangkok

After an 11 hour flight from Heathrow I landed in Bangkok at 3 pm. It was a great flight I would highly recommend Thai Airlines. Plenty of leg room in economy and the food was great! Bangkok Suvarnabumi Airport was highly efficient and I caught the express train into central Bangkok which only cost 80Baht (£2). I decided to walk from the train station to the guest house as it looked close on the map. That was a mistake!!! I didn’t realise how spread out Bangkok is and so what looked like a 20 min walk on the map turned out to be 1.5 hours. I didn’t mind as I…
