    Kochi to Munnar

I left Kochi after having a Keralan breakfast of appams and chickpea curry. The guest house I was staying at was located above a spice merchant and I will miss the smell of freshly ground cardamom and cloves in the morning. I wish I could capture and share the lovely aroma wafting through the hostel. Once I had repacked my rucksack I took an auto-rickshaw to the Fort Kochi ferry terminal. It was a Saturday morning and the streets were quiet. I caught the ferry over to Ernakulam passing though the backwaters. I then took another rickshaw through the busy streets of Ernakulam to the bus station. At the station…

    Kochi Day 2

I woke early this morning to watch the fishermen bringing in their overnight catch. The area around the Chinese fishing nets was busy with men sorting through their nets recovering the trapped fish. Other fishermen were relaxing having tea or chatting with friends to recover from the nights work. Make shift auctions were set up along the banks of the river to sell the fish on to the local traders. Others were on their mobiles selling the fresh tuna they had caught. Nearby locals fished off a jetty as the local ferry service passed by. I walked back into town to have breakfast in a restaurant popular with locals. I…

    Kochi Day 1

I woke early in the morning as the other people I was sharing the dorm with were leaving early for a flight. They got their revenge for being woken in the middle of the night! I decided to get up and start exploring Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin). Kochi is set in an estuary and comprises a series of islands and water ways. I was staying at Fort Kochi which is the old historic centre and was the centre of the spice trade. The architecture and culture of Kochi retains some of the colonial influences from the Portuguese, Dutch and the British but retains it’s own unique character. It is also…

    Goodbye Thailand. Hello India!

Today I ended my adventure in Thailand to head off to explore India. The train left at 5 pm and so I had a final chance walk around Chiang Mai during the day. The evenings and mornings were much cooler and even the cast were wearing jackets. I caught the overnight sleeper train to Bangkok which left at 5 pm from Chiang Mai station. I had an upper bunk bed on the train and it was a relatively comfortable journey except for the air conditioning. It was already cool at night in northern Thailand and with the air conditioning it was freezing. The Thai travellers came prepared with thick winter…
