    I woke early so set out to see the sunrise over the Chiang Dao mountain. Unfortunately I needed a permit to access the National Park as they are trying to crack down on poachers who hunt the local wildlife. The park can now only be accessed via an official guide but as it is off-season no guides were available. However, part of the mountain can be accessed Wat Tham Pha Phong which has a temple cut into the mountain side and can be accessed through a steep stairway cut through the forest.     Pai to Chiang Dao

    I caught an early bus back to Chiang Mai so that I could catch a second local bus service to Chiang Dao where there is a wildlife sanctuary. Once again I was the only tourist on the bus as it set out from the station as it is still off season. The bus dropped me off in the centre of the modern highway town of Chiang Dao. It was not the idilic countryside town that I imagined from the description in the guide book but the impressive Chiang Dao mountain (third highest in Thailand) dominated the horizon.
